The day the crazies came out

The sight of a woman running at the crack of dawn is not an anomaly where I live. However, once in a while, the crazies come out to play. Last Saturday was one of those days.

It started off pleasantly enough; a camaraderie wave to fellow runners as I stepped out of my house to start my run. After about an hour, I got to the end of my running route and made an about-turn. As I ran past a bus-stop, I heard a man call out, ‘Cor, is that it? You off home already?’

I ignored him and carried on with my running. 15 minutes later, as I reached a road, I heard a van honking behind me. I waited by the roadside, thinking the driver wanted to turn into the road I was about to cross. He didn’t. Instead he kept on making whooping noises and making an ass of himself with the horn. I ignored him and carried on running. Ten minutes later, I stopped to wipe the steam off my glasses and the sweat off my face. A man stopped beside me and said, ‘Don’t give up now, love. Come on, you can do it. Keep on running.’

I ignored him (there’s a theme here somewhere…) and carried on. As I approached my house, I ran past an older lady. ‘Morning, love! Lovely day, isn’t it,’ she called out.

‘Yes,’ I replied. ‘It is now.’
